Atlanta Speech School
Our meeting on Friday went great. The school is nestled in a hill and a pretty good size. Hallways divide the centers. Bray was his usual shy self at first meeting. The director was very nice. She gave us a tour of the school. We got to meet several teachers and see their classroom setups. The kids were working on their Christmas musical, so we were able to stand in there and watch for a bit. I couldn't help but to tear up as I stood there listening to the kids sing. Most were off pitch and lagging behind a little bit, but it didn't matter. They had so much spunk and confidence as they belted out the tunes, it was awesome! Prior to our meeting the director gave me a list of things to bring, IEP, audiograms, school test results, and anything else that I thought was important. I had all his teachers/therapist write a letter to the school to explain to them Bray's day to day struggles. I had a whole file folder full of info. I think she was surprised by all the info that came along with us, but I wanted her to get the whole picture of our situation. After reviewing all the info and talking with us and Bray. Yes, he actually talked! I was very shocked b/c she was someone new. She told us she could see Bray was a very bright boy. She feels that when we start AVT at Nemours that he will quickly catch up. Sign up for summer camp starts in March. She said to keep her updated and let her know how AVT is going. Once March comes if we felt he still needed the camp then she would sign him up. So we will see how he does in AVT at Nemours and go from there. We talked about the possibility of him going to school there for a year or so. She felt that the school could help Bray catch up in his speech, but was concerned that he may get bored academically. For now I've got clearer information. It's a great school. Come Jan. we will start AVT and hopefully treatment for the PANDAS. Maybe he will start progressing quickly. The director was very confident that once we started AVT that we wouldn't need to come to the summer program or during school year. We will see. :)

Actually, you're lucky to be in Atlanta, as it has not one, but two superb AV schools. Atlanta Speech School is a very fine place, but also check out the Auditory-Verbal Center in the Century Center.
ReplyDeleteWell I don't live in Atlanta, but I have an Aunt that does. I actually live 5 hours south of Atlanta. I didn't know about the Auditory-Verbal Center. I wish I had. I could have checked it out while we were there over the weekend. I think for now we will start AVT at Nemours in Jacksonville, Fl and see how he does first. Thanks for telling me about the 2nd place! :)
